Why Every Fashion Studio Needs a Dog: Here’s What Mine Taught Me
Creativity, Companionship & Unexpected Inspiration
Running a fashion design studio isn't always glamorous. Between sourcing sustainable materials, managing production deadlines, and guiding clients through their first collection, the days can get hectic. But amidst the moodboards, fabric swatches, and tech packs, there’s one constant that brings calm, joy, and (believe it or not) inspiration to my creative process: my dog.
Yes, he’s fluffy. Yes, he naps in the middle of fittings. And yes, he’s a very proud member of the Marcí by Jill team.
A Fashion Studio’s Unexpected Muse
Every morning, as I open the atelier doors, he trots in like he owns the place. His usual post? Nestled between fabric rolls, sunbathing under the cutting table, or occasionally curled up on a stack of muslins (which he clearly believes are for him). He’s not just a comforting presence. He’s become a kind of studio mascot, grounding me during stressful moments and making everyone who visits instantly smile.
How a Dog Can Inspire Fashion Design
It might sound whimsical, but there’s genuine creative value in having a four-legged assistant. Our daily walks, often through quiet countryside trails, are where many of my ideas begin. Those long, unhurried strolls spark thoughts about textures, shapes, and materials in a way a Pinterest scroll never could. I’ve sketched entire silhouettes in my head while watching him chase birds through tall grass.
His relaxed rhythm reminds me that fashion doesn’t have to be fast. It has to feel right.
Studio Cuddles, Style Advice & Canine Chic
During fittings and fabric draping sessions, he likes to wander over for a sniff or a cuddle. One afternoon, just for fun, I wrapped a leftover piece of fabric around him like a draped garment. And honestly, he looked like a tiny four-legged fashion icon. There’s even photo evidence!
He may not understand garment construction, but he’s taught me something deeper: presence. When I’m tempted to rush or overthink, his calm energy pulls me back into the now. And in design, being present is everything.
Grounding Energy in a High-Stress Industry
Fashion consulting is as much about emotional support as it is about aesthetics. My job is to help emerging designers feel confident and clear in their journey. Having a dog in the studio reminds me to embody that same grounded, gentle energy I offer to clients. He’s a reminder to pause, stretch, and yes, enjoy the ride.
Marci Tip:
“Don’t overlook the quiet sources of inspiration. The best creative sparks often come from stepping away. Whether it’s into nature or into a cuddle with a dog in a linen wrap.”
